This pair started as an experiment while I was developing my pattern for the adidas Samba.

I had received an order for a custom Samba and, before starting the client’s pair, wanted to make a test version of the pattern. Around the same time, I came across this unusual denim and lace material at a local fabric store in Melbourne. My ex-girlfriend actually persuaded me to buy it, and I’m glad she did — I haven’t come across anything quite like it since.

Two versions of the sample were eventually made in the same size and a very similar colourway. This is the original pattern-test pair, using grey suede behind the denim and lace. The second version uses mint suede instead.

The distressed denim is layered over lace with grey suede underneath, allowing the neutral backing to show through the exposed sections of the fabric.

White tumbled leather is used across the toe overlay, eyestay, Three Stripes and heel detailing, keeping the rest of the upper clean and allowing the denim/lace material to remain the focus.

The pair is finished on an all-gum adidas Samba sole.
